Lipids in skin ageing

This study will investigate the mechanisms that cause ageing and loss of skin function, and determine the age at which these changes begin.

It is being carried out at Salford Royal Hospital (part of Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust) by a team of researchers from the University of Manchester. It is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Criteria

  • White Caucasian
  • Aged 30-69 years old
  • Non-smoker
  • No history of inflammatory skin disease (eg psoriasis or severe eczema)
  • Not currently taking any blood thinners or anti-coagulants (eg warfarin)

Location

  • Dermatopharmacology Unit, Salford Royal Hospital (M6 8HD)

Involves

Taking part will involve:

  • Attending one clinic visit  where several non-invasive skin measurement tests will be carried out and a blood sample taken
  • Completing an online questionnaire
  • Tape stripping to measure how quickly the skin barrier can recover
  • Two skin biopsies, approx. 6mm, taken from the buttocks (optional)

Participants completing the study will receive £60. An additional payment will be made for those who undertake the optional biopsies.
