Obesity and muscle lysosome

This study aims to investigate how living with obesity affects skeletal muscle size, quality and metabolic function, and understand the processes that cause this.  Results from this study will be used to inform future research to help healthy weight loss and prevent weight regain.

It is being carried out by researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University and funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences.

 

Criteria

  • Age 18-35
  • Body Mass Index greater than 30kg/m2
  • Doing less exercise/activity each week than than current recommended guidelines (150 minutes moderate or 75 minutes vigorous activity)

Location

  • Manchester Metropolitan University (M1 7EL)

Involves

  • One 90 minute or two 45 minute clinic visits (participant choice)
  • Measurements of height, weight and body composition
  • MRI scan of thigh
  • Skeletal muscle biopsy sample from thigh (under local anaesthetic)

Participants will receive a £20 voucher on completion. Travel expenses up to £15 will be reimbursed.
