Study looking to understand why people with different chest conditions develop a cough and how their cough compares to people without a chest condition.

  • Cough is a protective reflex that is used to clear the airways of irritating material or phlegm and is one of the most common issues for which people seek medical advice. Cough is a common feature of a range of different chest and respiratory conditions and can be associated with poor quality of life.
  • The results of this study will help researchers understand the mechanisms of coughing and may be used to help improve treatments in the future.
  • This international study is being carried out by a team of researchers at the North West Lung Centre, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
